Hi John
Have you checked it's wear against spec and serviced it using a Riley 1.5 Workshop Manual? There is good availability on Ebay. _________________ Phase 1R Olympic

I need to get a Riley workshop manual, when i undo the large dome nut and fit some more shims under the pad it is less rough but i think there are now to many shims fitted |

Hi John
I have emailed you a digital copy of the Steering Section, to get you through this until you get a hard copy.
Good luck. _________________ Phase 1R Olympic

That is an excellent guide - well done for posting it Dave.
I agree, it is universal knowledge that can be applied to other racks.
If only we had a full set of guides like this for the Rochdales _________________ Phase 1R Olympic

John / Alan
One of the standout things for me is the use of EP 80/90 oil as opposed to grease for lubrication of the rack.
Thinking carefully about it, it makes perfect sense.
Not being familiar with Riley / MM parts I can't be certain but I suspect that The Riley rack is not far off the Mini one described in the link. I think all BMC/BL of the era used either Cam Gears or Burman? manufactured racks.
Perhaps John will let us know when he sorts his rack.

John,
If you can let us know the sizes maybe someone may have something suitable. I have a tin full of various sizes that have been accumulated over the years.
It might help if you could give a little history about the rack, ie. was it fitted to the car and working, was it in a pile of bits with a restoration case, or does it look as if someone has been "at it"
I am sure someone will be able to help.

Hi Dave
The rack came fitted to the car, and i removed it to repair the Ft. subframe, when refitted it seemed rough lock to lock i have spaced out the spring loaded damper but i had to far to many shims to make it smooth. If i had some shims i would remove the rack again and try again but i can't find any shims so there is no point removing it again until i have found some shims
thanks for your help john |
